Who is DJ Wiebe
Music and performing is in my blood. I started on drums. By age 11 I was voted “Best Young Drummer of the Netherlands” after a show at the Jazz and Sail Festival. Yes!
Understanding beats and tempos came naturally to me. So when I started playing records at parties the feedback was instantaneous, flattering and addictive. I knew that mixing music is what I wanted to do.
I got my first regular gig at a club named (what else?) “De Club” in my hometown of Bergen aan Zee. I was 14 years old. Sure, I went to school (I studied art and nursing) but music became the pulse of my free time, what defined me, moved me, and made me happy. I absorbed anything and everything that is melodic, beautiful, danceable, emotional, singable, powerful; R&B, soul, disco, rock, jazz, house, lounge, hip hop, electro, techno – I devoured it all, and played it for the crowd. And they wanted more. Combining
All these different styles is what I do best nowadays.
With this background I soon got a residency in the famous Dansen bij Jansen, one of Amsterdam’s oldest discotheques The challenge of mixing different genres and tempos the whole night long was the best training a DJ can get, and here I perfected my skills. No wonder that Jansen was where so many of the best known Dutch DJs got their start: Dimitri, Marcello, Marnix, Chuckie to name a few.
Next came a 7-year residency for crazy raucous dance parties. Wild, slightly raunchy, and very tongue-in-cheek, These parties were where the crowd came to show off their crazy outfits and to dance, dance, dance. House music is what they wanted – from happy to underground.
I started organizing my own parties and also played regularly on the Dutch festival circuit including Mysteryland, Pleasure Island, Dance Valley, Sneakerz and many more. I opened for many world-name acts like David Guetta, Afrojack, Bob Sinclar, Laidback Luke, Sidney Samson, Erik E., Roog, Hardwell, Fedde le Grand, DJ Jean to name just a few. Outside the Netherlands I played regularly at international festivals and private parties, including the annual advertising festival Cannes Lions (with its famous Massive Music party), fashion gigs in Milan, and lots more.
Work Hard, Play Hard, Music for Breakfast.
Fashion became the next anchor to my musical journey. After starting playing for various fashion shows since 2007, in 2010 I got a regular gig for Tommy Hilfiger as the in-house DJ for its fashion line openings, corporate parties, shows, and its own Peoples’ Place restaurant/club at the European headquarters in Amsterdam. I also am the in-store music director for Tommy Hilfiger stores worldwide.
Ask any DJ and he or she will tell you that the key to success is to understand your crowd, to feel what moves them and keep it coming. Positivity, happiness, energy, and telling a “musical story” the whole night long is what it’s all about, and what I do best. And I plan to keep doing it.
Way up productions
